The stunning growth of market cap in China

Reading Time:

To put the recent market movements in perspective, I made this chart:

Between December 2007 and June 2015, the size of the stock market in China increase by 83%.

Compare that with the period between early 2000 and early 2006. Within that time frame, the market cap actually decreased by about 3 percent. Throughout this period, the market cap averaged at about 4.15 trillion RMB.

It was not until 2007 that the market cap exceeded 10 trillion RMB -- and, in the same year, the cap reached and exceeded the 30 trillion mark.
