Data visualization principle: Does the chart needs to be interactive?

Re-posting a reminder that:

  1. Yes, interactive charts can be engaging.
  2. But many viewers will not see the data that is not shown by default.
  3. It can be rewarding to let users explore various aspects of the data, but the design costs may render the project less practical/worthwhile.

The second point is key, I think: If content is important for readers to see, don't hide it.
